Holiday Dressing

‘Tis the season for sequins, sparkles and velvet right? Shine on, crazy diamond! Holiday dressing is especially fun at Arc’s Value Village because a whole outfit can be put together without spending your whole holiday bonus check! Our personal shoppers recently hosted a holiday dressing event at our New Hope location and offered tips and tricks for dressing for work and social holiday parties. Here are three concepts they presented:

Concept 1: Monochrome plus texture.
A holiday outfit all in black is elegant and comfortable and classic. You might also try a monochromatic outfit in royal blue this year. Royal blue looks good on everyone, and also is a color that can be worn all year. When wearing a monochromatic outfit, it is important to add texture elements for depth and interest so your outfit is not one-dimensional. Texture could be the knit, such as cable knit sweater, or silk, chiffon, leather, cotton, you name it. Our stylists recommend a cozy cashmere sweater on top paired with pants or skirt in the same color.

Concept 2: Metals paired with velvets.
Metals are a great way to glam up your look for the holidays! The old rule of thumb for summer versus winter complexion no longer applies but you will find generally cool skin tones look best in light or white metals such as silver, and warm skin tones look best in gold, rose gold and coppers. Our stylists recommend pairing a metallic top with cozy velvet pants for a fresh but timeless holiday look.

Concept 3: Slim-fit pants with oversized sweater.
While it’s fun to show up in a “slinky little number” to a party, many Minnesotans are so over it. We just want to be warm and comfortable and pants are just that! Our stylists recommend pairing skinny pants with an oversized sweater or blazer. With the sweater, simply tuck the front corner of the sweater in to show your waist definition. With the blazer, a thin belt worn over the blazer completes the look. The key is to keep the pants slim-fit rather than wide leg for balance. Pair with rubber sole dress boots to get up those icy sidewalks.

Feeling inspired? Most of these outfits come together for about $25 or could be pulled together with pieces already in your closet. If you are feeling cautiously adventurous, book an appointment with one of our creative personal shoppers and they will help you put together a look that is festive and classy. Our personal shopper service is just one of many reasons why we are the Twin Cities’ best thrift store!  Shopping at Arc’s Value Village supports people with disabilities through The Arc Minnesota, and that’s a festive feeling that lasts all year long!
