Insights from a Mid-Century & Danish Modern Lover
You may have noticed the feature about Golden Age Design in the October issue of Mpls St. Paul Magazine. We noticed when owner Kara Kurth and her business partner & husband Bill gave a shout out to Arc’s Value Village as their fave thrift store. It seemed like a good opportunity to get to know Kara a little better and learn more about Golden Age Design.
VV (Value Village): Tell us about what happens at Golden Age Design!
KK (Kara Kurth): Bill and I started Golden Age in Spring 2011. We buy, refinish, & sell Mid Century & Danish Modern vintage furniture and accessories. We help people “own a piece of the golden age”. We also do some design consulting. Because of his in-depth knowledge, Bill is known as a “Professor of Mid Century”. It’s a second job for both of us. (During the day, Kara is Creative Director at Red Stamp & Bill is a union painter).
VV: Mid Century pieces are very in demand, aren’t they?
KK: They are harder to find, more in demand, thanks in part to TV shows like Mad Men. It’s also easy to mix with other designs; its clean style always “fits”. Mid Century is classy, not fussy, and it’s a blank canvas to accessorize.
VV: Is thrifting a part of your everyday life?
KK: Yes, I grew up thrifting. We live “very green” and believe in the “full circle” of reuse. Never throw away what you can reuse.
VV: We were thrilled to hear that Arc’s Value Village is your favorite thrift store. How does Arc’s Value Village fit into your life?
KK: I make the rounds to The Arc stores in Richfield, New Hope, Brooklyn Center. My favorite departments are Retro, Kids, and Home goods. I also love the (Halloween) BOO-tique for vintage. And I use my Village Rewards card! It’s always a treat to visit Arc’s Value Village. It’s my favorite thrift store because it’s organized, not daunting, to shop. It’s approachable & easy.
VV: Well thank you! We’re glad to hear that. What’s next for Golden Age Design?
KK: We’re lucky we can work out of our Robbinsdale home, but maybe someday we will have a brick & mortar site. I also love old sculpture, so I’m on the lookout for presidential busts like JFK or Ronald Reagan! Mostly, we like meeting people with the same passion for Mid Century Modern.
